John Lely Word Events
Verbal notation, also referred to as event scores, or prose scores emerged in the 1950s as a way of notating experimental music. Instead of relying on traditional methods of musical notation these scores often appear as a list of instructions on how to perform the piece of music. John Lely together with James Saunders compiled over 170 of these scores along with commentaries and explorations of compositional practices. John Lely will talk about this notational practice as well as perform a few selections from his book, Word Events: Perspective on Verbal Notation at 6 p.m. on Saturday June 25.
Starting at 7:30 p.m. we will open the stage to Mira Benjamin who will present new works by the composer’s collective Blue Moss Ensemble. mosse-elva bridges the experimental music communities of Canada and the UK by bringing together the Blue Moss Ensemble (Anna Höstman, Emilie LeBel, and Mitch Renaud) and UK composers John Lely and Scott Mc Laughlin in this concert performed by violinist Mira Benjamin.
mosse-elva: Mosse -marsh-river-border”+ Elva “see Elbe, Elver Old Norse for river” The name is thought to be very old and the meaning of it is not clear.
