Flotsam and Jetsam

Dates: September 16 to 23, 2006

Flotsam and Jetsam was an inquisitive curatorial project originating in an inventory of the accumulated art objects (and creative mementos) found in various closets and storage areas at Open Space. It was organized by Jesse Scott, Cosima Friesen, Ross Macaulay, and Zoë Kreye. Jesse Scott “was immediately pulled toward these left-behind curiosities, rather than the various prints and originals officially donated for fundraising reasons. These anomalies seemed part of Open Space’s intrinsic make-up. That Open Space is not a public gallery and doesn’t collect art [but that] does not mean that Open Space does not have an art collection.” By examining the marginalia from the past decade of programming, Flotsam and Jetsam invited analysis and recollection and playfully blurred the roles of curator and audience.
