Versatile and creative, flutist-composer-improviser Cléo Palacio-Quintin will bein residence at Open Space from February 11 to February 17, 2016. Palacio-Quintin’s work exploits the possibilities of the hyper-flute, an instrument she invented and has been developing since 1999. Connected to a computer using electronic sensors, the enhanced flute allows her to create interactive soundscapes combining instrumental and electronic music, and sometimes, video.

Her residency opens with a workshop on Thursday, February 11 at 7 p.m.where participants will be able to explore techniques for musical improvisation. Everyone is welcome to participate regardless of musical experience. It will be a safe place to explore and try something new.

On Saturday, February 13, in collaboration with Oak Bay Music's New Music Festival, Cléo Palacio-Quintin will give a talk and presentation about her work with focus on the hyper-flute, an instrument that combines the traditional flute with electronics and extends the range of the instrument into the digital realm. During the presentation she will also share her recent video work. This presentation will take place at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Oak Bay. For more information about the Oak Bay New Music Festival, please check out www.oakbaymusic.ca

Join us for Cléo Palacio-Quintin’s performance, Electric Breath, at Open Space on Wednesday, February 17 at 8 p.m. Featuring music written specifically for Palacio-Quintin’s, hyper-flute and video work, Electric Breathincludes pieces by Monique Jean (Montréal) and Karen Sunabacka(Winnipeg).

Just added: Cléo Palacio-Quintin will be giving a presentation at the Engineering Computer Science Building in room ECS600 at 11am on Tuesday February 16 at the University of Victoria.  This will be good oportunity to her more about her work with the hyperflute.

The Hyper-Flutes: Technological and Musical Perspectives

After more then 15 years of practice on the first hyper-flute prototype (a flute extended with sensors), Cléo Palacio-Quintin presents a retrospective of its instrumental practice from both technological and musical perspectives. Design, performance skills, and mapping strategies will be discussed, as well as interactive composition and improvisation.
