Artist-in-Residence: Cameron Kidd
Local artist and past Minister of Casual Living Cameron Kidd is the current go-to person in Victoria when it comes to community and youth-based mural projects. Kidd has helped to create a variety of projects that address the need for youth engagement and publicly accessible sites for street art.
Kidd will work as artist-in-residence at Open Space for ten months, funded by the City of Victoria’s Artist-in-Residence Program. During this time, he will complete three new mural-based projects with the Youth Empowerment Society, Integrate Arts Festival, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and Open Space. Other artists and youth participants will contribute to the murals and their installation.
His last mural, "Calligraffiti," can be seen on the Moss Street wall of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. He invited young poets and artists to collaborate on an original poem celebrating the arts and assisted them in translating into a mural for the wall.
The back wall at Open Space Arts Society is long overdue for a paint job. Open Space has commissioned Cameron Kidd, a professional artist who specializes in large-scale, community minded mural work to give the wall new life as part of a continuing series of community murals. Kidd will invite youth to participate in the mural's creation and execution.
Working with curatorial assistant Sara Fruchtman, Kidd’s residency will culminate in a symposium and publication in the spring of 2014.
