Open Space is bringing together local individuals and organizations for the DIY LIFE: Art + Science + Ecology Fair, taking place from 12-5 p.m. at Fisherman’s Wharf Park on Saturday, June 25, 2016. Join us for hands-on activities, interactive displays, DIY projects, and more! The fair is a space to encourage new connections between art, science, and ecology by sharing skills, presenting scientific or technical knowledge, and exploring the local ecology.
The fair grows out of the NATURAL SCIENCE exhibition at Open Space, an ongoing project by Ontario-based artist and researcher Dr. Jennifer Willet. Willet’s work explores the construction of natural, unnatural, and laboratory spaces. The DIY LIFE: Art + Science + Ecology Fair extends Dr. Willet’s investigations by encouraging people to come together and innovate in a community space.
Dr. Willet’s newest work, Algae Organ, a bicycle-propelled street organ that renders algae both musical and edible, will premiere at the fair. It will also feature works by local artists that engage with local ecologies and organisms, including projects that incorporate fermentation, invasive species, and marine ecosystems. Local experts and organizations will make unique presentations as well as share DIY skills and creative approaches to ecological problems. The whole fair will be documented in the DIY LIFE HACK zine.
