Neither One Nor the Other / Ni l'un, ni l'autre
This June, Open Space artist-run centre together with the National Film Board of Canada presents Neither One Nor the Other / Ni l’un, ni l’autre, a collaborative multimedia installation by Anishnabek artist Dominic Lafontaine and Michif artist Jessie Short.
Opening reception: Friday, June 14, 7-10 p.m.
Artist talk: Saturday, June 15, 2-4 p.m.
The installation opens up the experiences of phenomena that go largely unseen by tuning into the paranormal in the everyday. Consisting of video cameras and projectors arranged to create a feedback loop that is projected against a silver Mylar screen, the work seeks to augment and amplify these unseen energies that move around us. The light of the feedback loop reflecting on the walls creates otherworldly visuals and an immersive visual space that draws onlookers into its folds.
“We really tried to make visible the invisible, to take things that exist at all times in our subconscious and to put it at the level of consciousness,” says artist Jessie Short.
The installation Neither One Nor the Other was developed during the intensive creative lab Déranger, a project of the National Film Board of Canada’s (NFB) French Program. This initiative is designed for established multidisciplinary artists working in the French language and hailing from Inuit, Métis, and First Nations communities anywhere in Canada. The creative lab Déranger took place at the Video Pool Media Arts Centre in Winnipeg in November 2018.
