New Music Curator
Term contract to March 31, 2018, part-time (.25 FTE)
The New Music Curator (Curator) develops the new music program at Open Space including concerts and performances, festivals, commissions, residencies, workshops with visiting artists, and web-based programming. The Curator is part of the interdisciplinary curatorial team at Open Space that collaboratively plans programming in the visual and media arts, literary readings, and diverse cultural projects fused with Open Space’s growing Indigenous arts program.
The position involves communication and coordination with the Open Space Executive Director, Open Space staff and volunteers, local and visiting musicians, performers, composers, funders, donors, agents, and program partners.
In addition to programming, the New Music Curator writes marketing copy, participates in budget development, writes grants, schedules events, negotiates fees with artists and agents, and coordinates with the contract sound technician(s) regarding set-up and recording requirements. Evening and weekend work required.
Qualifications: Background in music (diploma or degree as a performer, composer, musicology) and one year minimum experience in program (concert) presentation and configuration. Open Space is looking for a curator with community and audience building experience as well as knowledge of Canadian and international new music. Fundraising and grant writing skill is required. Software: Office suite, audio editing software (Audacity or equivalent), and Adobe Creative Suite. Marketing experience. Ability to work independently and within budget. Strong organizational skills and able to work with a small team in a deadline driven work environment.
