Peter Morin
Residency Thursdays and Fridays throughout February and March, 2010
Opening and Performance Friday, June 11 at 6:00 p.m.
Continues to June 26
Peter Morin will close his residency with a performance and artist talk on June 11. Marvel at the magic of The Great Giffoni, share food and listen to the stories that have been gathered.
Since January, Peter Morin has been meeting with families, classes and individuals to hear and record stories. He takes this process one step further, and invites each visiting storyteller to create collaborative drawings of his or her story. Peter re-shapes each drawing into a three-dimensional form resembling a birch bark basket. The resulting collaborative works are presented in this exhibition curated by Peter and in a book anthologizing both the stories and images.

Artist, storyteller, writer and curator Peter Morin's second artist residency focused on celebrating stories of cultural learning, sharing questions about cultural practice and honouring how our cultural learning has positive effects on our lives. A Memory Talking Stick is about creating a ceremony to connect Aboriginal experiences of cultural practice with our larger community’s identities and nationhoods.

Peter Morin was on site at Open Space, working in the gallery on Thursdays and Fridays from February 4 to May 31, 2010.
Open Space is partnering with Surrounded By Cedar Child and Family Services to implement Morin’s residency. This workshop series and artist residency is made possible through funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Morin’s project is also supported by the City of Victoria artist-in-residence grant and the First Peoples Heritage, Language and Cultural Council.
