Daniel Reeve's Response to Making Bannock
The one performance I saw left me challenged and inspired. The visual displays forced me to reconcile the historical knowledge of the atrocities of residential school with the actual lived experience. Peter forced me to rip away the band-aid that allows non-natives to view the past through the security of 'them' and 'then'. I think of it now, months later, like being pulled into a dark tunnel with skin itching and eyes hot from tears.
Peter's remedy to all this pain, it seems to me, is simple: bannock heals. It brings people together. Indulging in warm bannock brings not only momentary comfort, but also a reminder of where community comes from.
I connected to this sensibility immediately. A recipe passed down from one generation to the next creates strength and continuity. Meals remembered bring long gone family back to life. A recipe is more than knowledge recalled, but community made whole and strong again.
Peter’s work demonstrates his generosity of spirit and his courage to renew community.
